The Classic Hawaiian Beach
Posted on Sep 28, 2009 under Big Island Beaches |Hapuna Beach State Park is Among the World’s Most Beautiful Beaches.
The Big Island’s Hapuna Beach State Park and Recreational Area, adjacent to the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, is a half-mile stretch of smooth white sand anchored on either side by lava cliffs. A dense coastline forest extends along the southern portion. This versatile beach features a large picnic pavilion for group parties as well as dozens of smaller tables, covered and uncovered, within grassy areas shaded by mature trees.
Swimming and bodysurfing are popular here in summer when the water is calm. Fine snorkeling is accessible by advanced swimmers along the northern and southern points. During winter part of the beach is eroded from high surf, though visitors will still find plenty of room to stretch out on the long, wide sand. Powerful winds and rough currents can pose a danger in winter, particularly around steep grades along the outer rocks where the water breaks hard.
You’ll find no shortage of public resources here, including two restroom-shower facilities, and two full-time lifeguard stations serving the north and south ends. The Paradise Grill concession offers a diverse menu with items from burgers to local dishes to smoothies (which are delicious), as well as beach rentals such as umbrellas and snorkeling gear.
Hapuna Beach may be reached in just 10 minutes, or approximately 10 miles north of Waikoloa Beach Resort as you drive along Highway 19 amid spectacular mountain scenery. Look for the Hapuna Beach turnoff on your left between Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea resorts. The paved parking lots contain an ample amount of parking stalls. Swimmers should be cautious and consider the warnings on any posted signs at the beach. Surfing is prohibited.
