A Flawless Wedge of Sand

Mauumae Beach. Though once lesser known than it is today, Mauumae Beach is still fairly unpopulated compared to its neighbors, Kaunaoa and Hapuna to the south and Spencer to the north. Encircled by the looming golden slopes of the Kohala Mountains, this pretty little beach is curled between two rock barriers extending from either side of a protected shore. The beach is bordered by low dunes covered with kiawe, kukui and other mature trees that offer shade.
Mauumae Beach is a quiet, secluded coastal retreat in which to sit under a tree and have a picnic, or to get a suntan. Its fine white sand slopes gently offshore into tranquil waters that are perfect for swimming. Snorkeling conditions along the rocks are fair as the water can be cloudy. There are some nice fishing spots along the rough, rocky shoreline to the north. Birders will enjoy exploring the dry fields inland to the beach and hikers will find many accessible points of discovery within the region. Public facilities are available at nearby Spencer Beach.
The easiest way to get to Mauumae Beach is from the sandy dirt trail on the south end of Spencer Beach Park, to the left of the pavilion. Spencer is located in Kawaihae, approximately 11 miles north of Waikoloa Resort. The trek along the pleasant tree-lined path to Mauumae takes roughly ten minutes. An alternative route is through the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Road off Highway 19. Ask the attendant at the resort entrance for access to Mauumae Beach. Turn right at Kamahoi Road at the third intersection. Keep to the right and drive straight along the dirt road and over two wooden bridges. A little ways further you will veer down a short hill, where you will see pole 22 on the left and parking on the right. Take the trail on the left to get down to the beach. Only a limited number of parking permits are issued daily by the resort.
Mauumae is one of several gorgeous Big Island beaches that are readily accessible from Waikoloa Beach Resort.
