Spend the Day at Spencer Beach

If you want a safe Big Island beach to take the kids where the water is calm, pack a lunch and head out to Spencer Beach Park in Kawaihae. The waters here are protected by a long offshore reef, and the smooth white sand is gentle on little feet. You can cook up a barbeque on one of the grills and sit at a shaded picnic table or in an open grassy area under native trees. A large covered pavilion with tables and electrical outlets provides a wonderful setting for parties or family gatherings. Shallow water near the shore and a mild underground slope provide safe conditions for children to play, and a lifeguard is usually on duty for added assurance.
Spencer Beach’s gentle tides rarely change except during severe storms. The soft sand, mild weather and quiet surroundings make it a great place for sunbathing, and decent places to snorkel can be found along the far ends of the beach.
Drive north on Highway 19 to Highway 270. Veer left at the Kawaihae Junction, continuing north on 270 towards the coast for approximately two miles. Turn left at the access road between mile markers 2 and 3. Drive down past the Puukohola Heiau parking lot on your right to reach the Samuel M. Spencer Beach Park entrance. Parking is usually plentiful. Public facilities are available on the north end of the parking lot.
